#OutandAbout: Mrs Maria & Mr Singh, Bangkok

If you have lived in Bangkok for while you would have heard all about Gaggan, the two Michelin starred Indian Restaurant in Ploenchit.  It was consistently listed as one of the top 50 ranking restaurants in the World which is why it was a shock to the city’s food lovers when it suddenly closed in 2019.
Gaggan then went on to surprise everyone by opening Gaggan Anand and Meatalicious, as well as a modern German restaurant with partners Thomas and Mathias Suhring.
Then in March, he cryptically announced over social media his new restaurant at the old Meatalicious location quoting his ‘Curry House Dream’.
Mrs Maria and Mr Singh is a culinary love story between Indian and Mexican cuisines.  The interior; an amalgamation of a Mardi Gras party and sitting inside a Van Gogh painting.

A culinary love story between Indian and Mexican cuisines

The menu is created as a picture book, taking you on the journey of how Mrs Maria and Mr Singh’s love story started (we obviously won’t ruin this for you!)

Mrs Maria and Mr Singh doesn’t serve beers or cocktails. It exclusively serves wine, something you may want to take into account to help plan your evening.

On the menu…

We started with the cold curry Scallop Cerviche which had the kick you would normally find in your Indian curry, mixed with sweet corn and topped with fresh scallop ceviche. If like me, you love Peruvian food then I would highly recommend this dish – one of my favourites from the night. We also had the aubergine and avocado taco, the contrast between the creamy filling (I added extra guacamole onto mine too) and the crisp lightness of the taco worked perfectly.

For our mains we went for the Kerala fried Cauliflower and Chicken Tikka Masala, served with a choice of rice or bread. The piece de resistance dish of the house is their lamb but some friends hadn’t recommended it. You’re not going to go wrong with a chicken tikka if it’s from Gaggan and quite rightly this dish did exactly what you expect in a chicken tikka; tender, melt in your mouth chicken, juicy and a flavourful sauce with just right amount of spices and depth. The Kerala fried cauliflower was the perfect accompany and a filling dish for our plant-based friends. We were still a little peckish so we ordered a side of the fish tacos to arrive with our curry but I ended up being disappointed with this.

There is no meal complete with dessert so we shared the churro served with elderflower ice-cream.  An interesting combination as I didn’t think elderflower was either a Mexican or an Indian flavour but it had a light fizz when combined with the sugary churro. In hindsight maybe I should have gone for the Baked Alaska Bombay.
